RAGBRAI: Des Moines to Knoxville (July 24)

Iowa is Sharing the Road!

It was a good ride today, but each segment is getting harder. About 55 miles today with a climb in overall elevation of around 2800ft. Lots of town spirit in Runnels, IA and our overnight town Knoxville.

We got some good shots of cars and bicycles coexisting on the road. Everyone in Iowa has been supportive and accommodating. We’ve felt safe as they have passed in either direction. Do you feel safe Sharing the Road in your city?

RAGBRAI: Perry to Des Moines (July 23)

Today was a welcomed short day. Only about 50 miles. Here is the map: Map – Perry to Des Moines, IA.

Favorite town to pass through has been Minburn. One of the residents referred to it as “the Paris of Iowa.” Great people

I’ve started asking other riders why they are doing RAGBRAI. Especially those who come back year after year. “It restores my faith in people.” These towns open there doors to thousands of people. They cook us food; they offer us water; they offer us stories and encouragement. This whole event is really about family.

I didn’t know what to expect when we signed up for the event. I intentionally stayed away from research. I didn’t want any preconceived notions. I am happy we are here; I am enjoying myself on the bike and with the communities we are interacting with.

Tomorrow is another 50 mile day but an elevation climb of 3000 feet. I will try to post again tomorrow.

Thanks for reading. Continue safely Sharing the Road with pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, school buses, and other vehicles.

RAGBRAI: Harlan to Perry (July 22)

Second Day. The ominous 83 mile day with an optional loop for a 100 plus mile day. We opted for the loop and road 111 miles over a 12 hour period, in heat, with hills. We brought it on ourselves. We wanted to prove that we could do it so we kept pushing. It was a goal that was achieved. Goals give you something to push for and something to build up to. The feeling of accomplishment is addicting. That is while our distances and events have continued to grow in distance.

Being from Florida, we are not very prepared for the “rolling hills.” They are significant but possible to push up, slowly. It was hot again; most likely the hottest of the week.

After a long day of peddling we saw some significant thunder storms in the evening. Down-pouring rain, thunder, and lightning. Wow.

Internet connectivity has been spotty at best. We have been pushing some short posts and photos out to Facebook.
