School Training Solutions Releases Research Illustrating Differences in State Laws Regarding Passing School Buses

STS Research Complements the ‘National Stop Arm Violation Survey’ Conducted Yearly by National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services

The numbers illustrated in the NASDPTS ‘National Stop Arm Violation Survey’ are always shocking, and one of the contributing factors we discussed was that drivers do not know when (and when not) to stop for a school bus.

 

In an effort to further improve school bus safety and promote community awareness, School Training Solutions® (STS), a division of Smart Horizons, has researched, compiled, and distributed findings detailing state laws regarding passing school buses. A need for this information was established at the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (NASDPTS) Annual Conference in October 2012.

“The numbers illustrated in the NASDPTS ‘National Stop Arm Violation Survey’ are always shocking, and one of the contributing factors we discussed was that drivers do not know when (and when not) to stop for a school bus,” says Patrick Willi, Director of School Training Solutions. He continues, “By compiling these laws in one place, we wanted to illustrate how varied these laws are from state to state. We are excited that NASDPTS has picked up the document and distributed it to its members.”

The document presents laws from all 50 states related to passing a stopped school bus. Each state law is different. School Training Solutions hopes the research will help drive conversations about these laws and promote more community awareness about school bus loading and unloading safety.

The document, which is available for download on the web sites for School Training Solutions and the NASDPTS, has generated quite a stir within the pupil transportation community and has been covered in School Bus Fleet and School Transportation News.
